-Mechanochemistry. Owing to its unique physiochemical properties, the difluoromethoxy group is emerging as an important structural motif in pharmaceutical and agrochemical research. Carsten Bolm and coworkers develop mechanochemical difluoromethylation reactions of primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols. The simplicity of the process and the pOSSibility to purify the products by filtration suggest that these milling events offer opportunities for a more environmentally benign reaction control.

-Artificial Water Channels. In natural systems, water transport across the cellular plasma membranes is mainly mediated by naturally occurring channel protein aquaporins (AQPs), which leads to a series of important physiological functions, including cell migration. Jun-Li Hou (侯军利), Yunfeng Wang (王云峰), and coworkers report that artificial water channels can induce cell protrusion and cell migration as well, which may provide a way for the treatment of AQP-related diseases.

-Formal Cross-Dimerization. Formal cross-dimerization of two different strained rings represents an innovative strategy for the creation of specific ring systems that are otherwise inaccessible. However, controlling the reactivity and site-selectivity has been difficult to achieve. Xiao-Song Xue (薛小松), Dongbing Zhao (赵东兵), and coworkers describe a system employing a synergistic Ni/Mg catalyst for site-selective reversal of formal cross-dimerization of benzocyclobutenones and silacyclobutanes. Their approach offers new opportunities for transition metal-catalyzed ring expansion of strained rings toward diverse silacycles.

-Carbon Nanohoops. The incorporation of heteroatoms into carbon nanohoops can significantly lower aromatic stabilization energy and enrich physicochemical properties. Zhaohui Wang (王朝晖) and coworkers have successfully synthesized a novel kind of axially N-embedded quasi-carbon nanohoops using intramolecular or intermolecular nickel-mediated Yamamoto coupling reactions. They speculate that similar strategies may be employed in the design and synthesis of structure-precise segments of graphitic-N-doped single-walled carbon nanotubes.

-Photocatalytic Biomass Conversion. Jing Liu (刘婧), Yu Li (李昱), Bao-Lian Su (苏宝连), and coworkers report the highly selective photocatalytic conversion of glucose on a holo-symmetrically spherical three-dimensionally ordered macroporous TiO2–CdSe heterojunction photonic crystal structure (s-TCS). The optimized s-TCS-4 photocatalyst displays the highest catalytic performance for glucose oxidation and hydrogen production. This work may help facilitate conversion of biomass into high-value-added chemicals and provide direction for the design of high-performance photocatalysts.

-Aqueous Zinc Batteries. Zhiqiang Zhu (朱智强) and coworkers propose a molecular design strategy to boost the electrochemical performance of organic electrode materials by extending the π-conjugation through redox-active N-heterocycles. The organic compound, DQDPD, was synthesized as a cathode for aqueous zinc batteries and exhibits an impressive capacity and the highest energy density of those studied. Moreover, the DQDPD cathode demonstrates excellent performance in the soft-package cell, showing great potential for many practical applications.

-Perovskite Solar Cells. The hole transport layer and perovskite interface are critical for fabricating inverted perovskite solar cells with high efficiency. Wu-Qiang Wu (吴武强) and coworkers introduce a bilateral chemical linker to simultaneously achieve favorable chemical interaction with the hole transport underlayer and form robust coordination bonding with the buried perovskite bottom layer, thus significantly improving the contact affinity, facilitating the hole extraction, well-passivating the interfacial defects, and relieving the nonradiative charge recombination. Their approach results in a champion efficiency of 22.23%.

-CO2 Electroreduction. The structure–performance relationships of the molecularly dispersed heterogenized metallomacrocycles (MDHMs) with π-conjugated heterojunctions is important yet remains poorly understood. Qi-Long Zhu (朱起龙) and coworkers contribute to the understanding of this relationship by designing and synthesizing a series of novel nickel phthalocyanines for CO2 electroreduction to CO. The heterointerfacial effect and self-built microenvironment of the MDHMs are significantly modulated by accurate structural clipping at the molecular level, allowing manipulation of the electrocatalytic performance for CO2-to-CO conversion.

-Dynamic Polymers. Dynamic polymers with both physical interactions and dynamic covalent bonds are desirable for their superior performance, but it remains difficult to synthesize dry dynamic polymers in an efficient manner. Peng-Fei Cao (曹鹏飞) and coworkers report a novel synthesis of dynamic polymers from a naturally-derived thioctic acid monomer, based on a unique reaction mechanism where a chlorinated solvent can react and stabilize the terminal radical species thus preventing the depolymerization process. The resulting dynamic polymer is highly adhesive and can be used in 3D printing, as well as many other applications.

-CO2 Photoreduction. Mimicking natural photosynthesis to achieve photoreduction of CO2 with H2O for fuels or value-added chemicals has attracted tremendous interest yet remains elusive. Zhimin Liu (刘志敏) and coworkers report temporally separated CO2 photoreduction and H2O photooxidation over redox-active o-hydroxyazo-based conjugated organic polymer films with CO as the sole reduction product. The highly efficient method provides new insights for the design of conjugated organic polymer photocatalysts and artificial photosynthesis.

The reaction proceeds via ligand-controlled selective carbene insertion into O–H and C–H bonds and provides a general and versatile procedure for the preparation of a variety of synthetically useful β-boryl quaternary aldehydes and cyclopropylboronate esters bearing a quaternary carbon center.

-Single-Atom Electrocatalysts. Kai Yuan (袁凯), Xiaodong Zhuang (庄小东), Yiwang Chen (陈义旺), and coworkers report a single-atom catalyst featuring localized penta-coordinated cobalt porphyrin structure and exhibiting good performance for multiple reactions, such as CO2 reduction and oxygen reduction reaction, for Zn–air batteries. Their work proves the positive electrocatalytic contribution of axial penta-coordination on well-defined metal-porphyrin-based catalysts and offers an atomic understanding of the structure–performance relationship on single-atom catalysts for future design considerations.

-Plasmonic Catalysis. Plasmonic photocatalysis has long been regarded as a promising strategy for sustainable energy conversion. However, efficient utilization of hot electrons by reactants without surface-seeking groups is difficult to achieve due to the low coordination of reactant molecules with the metal surface. Wei Xie (谢微) and coworkers disclose a new concept of polarized nanocatalysts that mimic chemical polarity at the nanometer scale and enhance hot electron utilization for visible light photocatalysis. With a photo-recycling strategy, they develop a one-pot, hot-electron-driven synthesis of amide compounds, a six-electron reduction from nitro reactants, by using low-cost Ag-TiO2 catalysts.

-Visible Strain Sensing. Flexible electronics are expected to revolutionize personal health management. However, the fabrication of smart sensors with high robustness, reliability, and visible readout remains a significant challenge. Gang He (何刚) and coworkers report stretchable ionogel-containing, viologen-based ionic liquids for strain sensing applications, where the viologen confers the electrochromic and electrofluorochromic properties to the sensors. The devices show strain-induced changes of conductivity and color, enabling strain sensors with simple visible readouts.

-Hydrogen Oxidation Catalysis. The hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) in alkaline conditions is of great importance for the application of anion-exchange membrane fuel cells. However, electrocatalysts for the alkaline HOR suffers from unfavorably slow kinetics. Yong Xu (徐勇), Haiping Lin (林海平), Xiaoqing Huang (黄小青), and coworkers fabricate a Ru2Ni multilayer nanosheet via a facile wet-chemical method and disclose a post-annealing process that greatly improves alkaline HOR performance.

-Lead-Free Ferroelastic Semiconductor. Lead-based organic–inorganic hybrids occupy a niche in the field of optoelectronics owing to exceptional semiconducting properties and potential ferroelasticity. Nevertheless, the possible toxicity of lead restricts their widespread application. Hai-Feng Lu (陆海峰), Da-Wei Fu (付大伟), Qiang Guo (郭强), and coworkers report two new lead-free ferroelastic semiconductors, [DMMClEA]3Bi2Br9 and [DMMClEA]3Sb2Br9, that have characteristics of double dielectric switching. Their application in temperature sensors is highly anticipated.
